  • Shonen is "anime and manga targeted at a young audience of usually 14 and under". Pretty much this, though you could add "more male targeted" as well. It is not defined by characteristics as your friend would think, though they do often have those characteristics. I would tend to say it has to do with the source material.

  • Shounen anime also romanized as shonen anime refers to a specific category of anime series, specifically made for young boys, with the phrase literally translating to boy’s animation in English. “Shounen anime” include series like Pokémon, Dragon Ball or One Piece and could be considered the first step toward becoming an Otaku or Weeb .
