It is an interconnected network, similar to Internet/World Wide Web. It is an advanced form of communication at the center of the story of Serial Experiments Lain.
The show is so focused on Lain, that really the other characters hardly ever get focus, so they can't drag the show down too much. And the designs of the characters are pretty good actually, so the issue becomes even less.Sep 24, 2018
The Knights of the Eastern Calculus (often the Knights) is a group of pseudonymous, notorious and highly-skilled computer crackers. They interact with Lain in various ways, possibly trying to trick her into entering The Wired or joining them iding the implementation of Protocol 7.
Lain is, purely and simply, developing increasingly severe symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia throughout the series, and spends much of it confined for her own sake. Everyone's reactions to her are just as normal as real life, but are all filtered through Lain's hallucinations and delusions.

Lain is by far one of my favorite animes of all time. The story is deep, well thought out, and very entertaining throughout. The characters develop perfectly, the atmosphere is incredible, and the story is flawless. Some of the story is left slightly open ended, leaving the viewer to fill in his or her own conclusions.
This storyline belongs to the forgotten anime Serial Experiments Lain. This 1998 anime might have similar themes to The Matrix and Neon Genesis Evangelion, but nothing compares to the satirical world of Serial Experiments Lain.Dec 23, 2021
