Sailor Moon first appeared on Cartoon Network's Toonami block on June 1, 1998 and was in the lineup until 2001. Reruns of the series then aired on Cartoon Network outside of Toonami in 2002. Sailor Moon also appeared on Toonami's Rising Sun and Midnight Run.

Sailor Moon, originally released in Japan as Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (Japanese: 美少女戦士セーラームーン, Hepburn: Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn) and later as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, is a Japanese superheroine anime television series produced by Toei Animation using Super Sentai motifs.

Usagi Tsukino (月野 うさぎ, Tsukino Usagi, called Serena Tsukino in the original English dub of the first anime adaptation) is the main protagonist of the series. Usagi is a careless fourteen-year-old girl with an enormous capacity for love, compassion, and understanding.

In 2002, Cartoon Network dropped the series and the rights expired despite the fact that the series was still very popular. This was due to the fact the DiC/Cloverway failed to renew the license for the anime and because of the disputes between Toei Animation and Naoko Takeuchi over the meddling of her anime series.

Sailor Moon next turned into a social phenomenon by reaching far beyond the boundaries of its genre, gaining widespread popularity among adults as well as children, and appealing to all genders and sexual orientations.

On Aug. 28, 1995, Sailor Moon made its debut outside of Japan, introducing North American audiences to Usagi Tsukino and her crew of transforming heroines. Only she wasn't known as Usagi; rather, her name was "Americanized" to Serena, with a new script to boot.Aug 28, 2020

Funimation also licensed the anime for home video release in 2014. In the United States, the series premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami block on May 3, 2014. In Australia, the series was licensed by Madman Entertainment and the first season began airing on SBS 2, in Japanese with English subtitles, on September 30, 2014.

Sailor Moon is one of the most popular female-lead anime's to this day. It spans 200 episodes, and aired on Toonami from 1998-2001; Toonami also aired all three of Sailor Moon's movies.
